GRC Lites Recap

GRC Lites Race Recap

: Stop us if you’ve heard this one before — Olsbergs MSE teammates Oliver Eriksson and Austin Cindric split a doubleheader event in the GRC Lites class. After taking a race apiece in Los Angeles, the top two drivers in the standings did the same thing in Barbados during GRC Lites’ first trip outside of the United States.
Oliver Eriksson 1SATURDAY RECAP: While Oliver Eriksson claimed a front row spot for the final, any hopes of an Olsbergs MSE 12 finish on Saturday took a major blow in the second round of heats when Austin Cindric’s battery line failed on the final lap, causing him to finish last in his heat and start from the back. But after Eriksson grabbed the lead at the start, Cindric pushed through the field to claim second place within the race’s first two laps, and the rout was on.

Behind them, Tanner Whitten, Alejandro Fernandez, and Alex Keyes — the same trio of drivers that had run-ins with one another in Los Angeles — battled mightily for third. Fernandez managed to grab the spot with Keyes coming home fourth and Miles Maroney recovering from a penalty to claim fifth as Whitten slid back in the race’s final laps.

SUNDAY RECAP: Cindric and Keyes won the second-round heats to claim the top two starting spots in the main event, but Eriksson managed to re-establish himself running behind his teammate when Keyes experienced a CV joint failure to fall from a podium position.

Fernandez and Maroney battled for third, but Maroney earned his third penalty of the weekend during the main event to force a stop-and-go and lost the position. He recovered to maintain fourth place, but for the second day in a row the same three drivers would stand atop the podium.

QUOTES: A selection of quotes from Sunday’s Red Bull Global Rallycross Barbados, the eleventh round of the 2015 GRC Lites season:

Austin Cindric, #77 Olsbergs MSE GRC Lites: “Saturday was hectic between my schedule and mechanical issues, and I had to start at the back of the grid in the final. Today was all about trying to stay on top, and I followed through with that — I won both my heats and I won the final. It’s going to be tough in Las Vegas. There are about six of us who can win a race, and it’s not the easiest thing in the world, especially if Oliver is right behind you!”

Oliver Eriksson, #16 Olsbergs MSE GRC Lites: “In that second heat, I couldn’t see the white line coming out of the joker, so I lost the lead and ended up second. I didn’t have as good of a starting position in the final and messed up the start a little bit, but I tried to move up and got to second.”

Alex Keyes, #61 Dreyer & Reinbold Racing GRC Lites: “We had problems all day with breaking the left rear on the jump. In qualifying it broke on the first lap — we ended up breaking a wheel bearing, but we got that fixed for the first heat and started last. On the second or third lap, one of the uprights broke that had probably been weakened when the bearing broke before. We replaced everything for heat two, went out and ended up winning the heat — Oliver got a penalty, but I was right there. We were able to start on the front row and got a good jump off the line, which was good because I’d been struggling with the standing starts this weekend. I saw Eriksson coming out of the joker and I was pushing real hard, and at that point I felt a vibration. When I went into the next corner, the car immediately snapped and I was four wheels off the road, so I knew something was broken again and it ended up being a halfshaft.”
