13 Things to do in the Month of September

For those look­ing for a break from their usual cycle of activ­i­ties and events, here are 13 things you should def­i­nitely do/​visit/​experience this month. Also look out for activ­i­ties for the 50th Anniver­sary.

Mark the date for this amaz­ing pageant that allows some of the most beau­ti­ful and tal­ented Bar­ba­dian young women to com­pete for the much cov­eted Miss Uni­verse Bar­ba­dos Crown and the hon­our of rep­re­sent­ing Bar­ba­dos at the Miss Uni­verse Pageant.

This com­pe­ti­tion sees the best of the best of moor sport in the regioncom­pete in this meet at bushy park. This race meet is a 23 race pro­gramme includ­ing head­line com­pe­ti­tions such as round three of the 2016 Seaboard Marine Caribbean Motor Rac­ing Cham­pi­onship (CMRC), rounds of the Suzuki Chal­lenge Series SR3 Cup and Swift Cup and the BPMSI’s own 2016 Club Cham­pi­onship. Gates for the qual­i­fy­ing rounds on Sep­tem­ber 3rd open at 9am.

The Bar­ba­dos Can­cer Soci­ety presents Sagi­cor Globeathon Bar­ba­dos. The annual walk and run is a plat­form to edu­cate per­sons on gynae­co­log­i­cal can­cer and pro­vide tips for lifestyle changes. The walk & 5K run starts and ends at the Bay Street Esplanade with a route through Bridgetown. This year the pro­ceeds will be in aid of improv­ing Women’s Can­cer Ser­vices at the Queen Eliz­a­beth Hos­pi­tal. The warm up ses­sion starts at 3:30pm.

Kon­scious Wednes­daze at The Marina Bar and Restaurant

Each day of each week in the year, some restau­rants in Bar­ba­dos have a spe­cial themed night. Wednes­days in Sep­tem­ber fea­tures Kon­scious Wednes­daze at the Marina Bar and Restau­rant, where patrons can come out and hear their favourite con­scious reg­gae tunes, while enjoy­ing great food. If you choose to attend, make sue to grab a Tep­pa­nyaki Grill table, and expe­ri­ence the chef cook­ing up close and in per­son just for you!

A Trip to the Movies

Two movies slated to air in the month of Sep­tem­ber are Pete’s Dragon and Brid­get Jones’ Baby. Pete Dragon fea­tures the adven­tures of an orphaned boy named Pete and his dragon best friend, Elliot, while Brid­get Jones’ Baby is yet another sequel in the Brid­get Jones’ series, this time fea­tur­ing the adven­tures of Jones as she enters her 40s.

Exotic Bar­ba­dos – 80 Mile Tour

This exotic Tour is ideal for those who wish to truly explore Bar­ba­dos. This is no ordi­nary excur­sion. The tour will last for 6 to 7 hours and will allow you to dis­cover the west coast of the island and explore the north and east coasts with its coral cliffs. The tour cul­mi­nates at Sun­bury Plan­ta­tion House, a 300 year old plan­ta­tion great house, where patrons will be able to have a tour of the prop­erty and enjoy a buf­fet lunch. Reg­gae on the Board­walk

Join David Kir­ton and the live band as he per­forms his End of Sum­mer edi­tion at Blakey’s on the Board­walk. He will be per­form­ing some of his biggest hits of Mod­ern Roots Reg­gae, Gimme de Green Cam­ou­flage, Time for change and Free to Fly. Spe­cial guest per­for­mances by Albert Olton, Tabitha and the Uproot Project. Admis­sion is free!

Hike Bar­ba­dos: Spe­cial Hike

Bring your hik­ing gear to St. George Parish Church and learn about Bar­ba­dos, while enjoy­ing a good work­out and good com­pany. This Spe­cial Hike is a moon­light hike and begins at 6pm.

Jam­min Sun Blast Cruise

Swim and snorkel with the tur­tles over a ship wreck, enjoy the water slides, or just relax under the sun on a waterbed every Tues­day from 9am until 2: 30pm.

Redis­cover Restau­rant Programme

Expe­ri­ence a 3-​course din­ner, with a bot­tle of wine, at the low rate of BDS $99 per­son at select restau­rants.

Curated by Lois Craw­ford, fea­tur­ing work from Lorna Wil­son, Gor­don Gor­don Oliver Ashby, Mary Gibbs, Cather­ine Chee-​A Tow, Lois Craw­ford, Chris­to­bel Ish­mael, Sher­ridean Taylor-​Skeete, Romell Chase, Arlette St Hill, Glo­ria Chung, Sally Henry, Mar­tina Pile Zahles. The exhi­bi­tion runs from 5th August to 27th Sep­tem­ber at the Art Splash Gallery daily from 9:00am to 3:00pm. Admis­sion is free.

Mahalia’s Cor­ner 2016

Mahalia’s Cor­ner also has an open Mic ses­sion where the audi­ence can take their tal­ent to the stage in spo­ken word, music or any other expres­sive medium. The sea­son pre­mière is Sun­day 04th Sep­tem­ber at 8:00pm fea­tur­ing Joaquin. Ticket can be pur­chase at select loca­tions island wide.

Learn to Surf

All you need is a swim­suit, a towel, some swim­ming abil­ity, sun­screen and a smile. Jay, the head coach and owner will get you the best waves on island and even GoPro film your les­son! Surf­board are also avail­able for rent/​hire. Ride the Tide Surf School received Tri­pAd­vi­sor Cer­tifi­cate of Excel­lence 2016.

While Sep­tem­ber may not be a month of thrills and spills, there is nonethe­less some­thing of inter­est for every­one to enjoy across the island. Do not miss out of these events and activities!
